It is a good question…..
And the answer is kind of straightforward but also quite complicated. There are maybe 100,000 Lutherans in GB – some of them born in this country, but the vast majority are either visiting, working here for a while, living here while they study. Some are expats, some are refugees: and we live scattered all over these islands. Our IT guru and passionate Lutheran, Martin Flower, suggested we put together this page to let everyone know about the exciting plans we have for the church, to report on what is already happening and to show the world out there what a marvellously diverse and interesting community of faith we are already. In other words, reading this ‘Info Page’ should give you a glimpse of what the LCiGB is like.
5 facts you might not know:
- Lutherans are named after Martin Luther. Just Martin Luther, not Martin Luther King.
- There are about 68 million Lutherans worldwide
- The Lutheran Church in GB worships in English, but also in Amharic, Cantonese and Mandarin, Oromo, Polish, Swahili and Tigrinya. We will celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2011.
- Music is a big part of Lutheran Worship – from Bach and Buxtehude through Mendelssohn to African Gospel. The best known Lutheran Hymn is “A mighty fortress is our God” – and you can listen to it here: A Mighty Fortress
- We’re looking forward to our 500th birthday in 2017 – of the whole Lutheran church, that is.
So please come back and visit this page again – and our new website, which you can find here.
