In October 2006 Bishop Walter Jagucki and Pastor Libby Toomsalu celebrated a joint Ordination Anniversary at their congregation in Leeds. In the picture: Pastors Mark Hardy, Libby Toomsalu, Gita Putce of the Latvian Church, Jana Jeruma-Grinberga and Bishop Walter Jagucki.

Lay Ministers of the LCiGB at a Study Day
Each year LCiGB Pastors and Lay Ministers are offered the opportunity to go on retreat together – work commitments permitting, many do come each year. In 2006 we went to Catthorpe, a Latvian house in Leicestershire, and were led in meditation by Dr Stephanie Rybak.
In July 2006 St Anne’s said farewell to Pastor Johann Schneider, retiring after many years of devoted service to the congregation, and to the German church in GB. Pastor Johann and his wife, Barbara, are now living in retirement in Kent. (Photo by Alan Symes)

On Saturday 17 January a new Bishop was consecrated for the Lutheran Church in GB. About 300 people attended the service, including representatives of all our congregations as well as guests from the UK and further afield.

Among the Bishops attending were (from left above) Jon Adalsteinn Baldvinsson, from Holar in Iceland; Archbishop Elmars Rozitis of the Latvian Church outside Latvia; new Bishop of the LCiGB, Jana Jeruma-Grinberga, Antje Jackelen from Lund, Sweden; Bishop Emeritus Walter Jagucki; Presiding Bishop ALex Malasusa (Tanzania) and Matti Repo, from Tampere in Finland. Bishop Ilona Fritz from the Netherlands is missing from this picture.

Dr Ishmael Noko, General Secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, brought a marvellous art work for our new office. In the picture also – Dr Norbert Denecke, from the Vereinigte Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche Deutschlands (United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany) and Rev’d Juha Rintamaki, Chairman of the Lutheran Council of Great Britain, as well as Dr Indra Sinka, Bishop Jana’s sister-in-law!

In this photo by Ruta Abakuka, Marlies Adam and Rev’d Tom Bruch, together with Dean Patkai, the Bishop Emeritus and Bishop Jana watch the presentation by Dr Noko. In the front is Bishop Jana’s youngest niece, Ieva.

Dean Patkai and Bishop Emeritus Jagucki seemed to enjoy reminiscing about their time in leadership…

Dr Norbert Denecke from VELKD presented a book about Lutheran Women – very appropriately:

….. which Bishop Jana passed straight to the Treasurer of the LCiGB, Linda Bruch.

There was a strong Latvian presence at the service and at the reception: here Pastor Eliza Zikmane is joined by Dean Juris Jurgis and his wife, Enid, together with Archbishop Rozitis.

Also there was Bishop Jana’s husband, Janis (far right) with his 3 brothers and sister.
One small curiosity: Rev’d Dr Guntis Kalme from the Luther Academy in Riga met Praxedis Bouwman, President of KALME (Communication Committee of Lutheran Minority Churches in Europe).
